CHAPTER SEVEN

Tanner stood next to Paige as she inserted the key into the padlock and turned it. It clicked open.

As he rolled the door up on its track, sunlight flooded the ten-by-twelve space. His heart sank until it wobbled to a stop between his knees.

The left two-thirds of the unit were filled, front to back. He counted eight large-screen TVs. Other electronic devices were stacked around them—DVD players, gaming consoles, speakers, monitors. Jewelry boxes lay on top of some of the stacks. Several backpacks sat in front, names like Canon and Nikon giving away what was inside. Other flatter cases probably contained laptops and iPads.

Tanner swallowed the bile working its way up his throat. What he was looking at meant one thing. And Paige was involved. He’d have to call the police.

When he turned to say so, his chest clenched.

She’d taken off the sunglasses and slid them over the wig. She now stood with her arms crossed over her stomach, eyes wide and face pale. “This can’t be mine. I wouldn’t be dealing in stolen property.”

There wasn’t any conviction in her tone. Instead, it held a plea, as if she was begging a higher power to let what she said be true.

But God wasn’t going to help her out of this one. As much as Tanner wanted to, he couldn’t deny the facts. She remembered the unit. It had to be hers.

But Thomas had the key and code. Her attacker even said so. And Thomas was her brother. Maybe she knew the location of his storage unit without knowing what was inside.

When he pulled his phone from his pocket, her face paled even more. He hesitated. “We’ve got to call the police. They’ll get to the bottom of this. You got the key and code from Thomas, so this stuff is probably his.” That was what he’d believe until evidence proved him wrong.

He punched in the three numbers. “Don’t touch anything. You don’t want to leave prints.”

She nodded but didn’t speak. Fear filled her eyes, and worry lined her face. His heart twisted, but instead of moving to her side, he stepped through the open door. Cell service would be better outside the metal structure.

When he finished the call and walked back into the unit, Paige stood near the back, staring into an open box.

He rushed toward her. “I told you not to touch anything.”

When she looked at him, her face had lost even more color. “This is mine.”

He looked into the box. A high school yearbook lay on top. “Maybe it’s your brother’s.”

“No.” She pointed at the script on the cover. “If I’m twenty-eight, this would be the year I graduated.”

“Maybe it belongs to a friend of his.” Okay, he was grasping at straws. The problem was, he really didn’t want it to be true. He liked and respected Paige. She’d overcome incredible odds. It wasn’t just the recent events in her life that had impressed him. She’d apparently had a rough upbringing. She’d joined a gang and done hard time, but still walked away from a life of crime.
